Update 3: Masks in the game

Greetings and salutations game aficionados,

welcome on board to all new backers and thanks to kickstarter for putting us on their selected projects list and including us in their recommendations news!

Today we want to talk a little about masks. In Backdrop, donning a mask means more than simply swapping a set of skills with another. It actually defines your protagonists personality, changing the way you interact with others and how they perceive you. Masks grant unique skills and perks (such as the knight’s heavy armour), but also have their weak sides (like making the knight slower in combat and making it hard to sneak up on someone). But the system goes further. In a classic Shakespear play, many roles are immediately recognizable and usually have a few defining traits. The same goes for a mask: It focuses on a few strong character traits and this will define the range of possibilities you have to interact with others and the environment. This makes donning a mask a wide-reaching decision and can lead to very different results.

Here is a short video that shows a simple example – in the actual game choices will be a little less obvious.

Keep spreading the word and thanks for supporting the game!

Day 2 and 3 Legends!

Greetings and salutations dear audience and cast members,

though off to a slow start, our campaign is gathering momentum thanks to all of you great people and especially our three Legend backers who have had the good grace and great taste to support us. A mighty cheer and humble “Thank You!” to all of you!

We also have been featured by Hardcore gamer saying this: “…It’s a relatively common occurrence to see RPGs hit Kickstarter. However, none of them have ever had the look of Backdrop….The paper doll actors look incredible, as does the scenery. The game ensures that this design concept flows through to gameplay…”

Well, we won’t argue with that 🙂

We are currently preparing our next video diving a little deeper into the topic of masks in the game, which we should finish in the next day or two.

If you want to support us further, please join our thunderclap (on the left side of this page), so we can make a loud noise towards the end of the campaign. And as always tell the world and continue to support us on Facebook and follow us on Twitter to get the latest updates!

Make your dream become reality!

1st kickstarter update!

Greetings and salutations dear backers, would be backers and soon-to-be-backers!

Thanks to your generosity we passed the 100 backers mark and we also got picked by the kickstarter team as one of the projects they love! Thanks a lot for that, we love you right back!

We were selected Hot Topic by the biggest German games magazine gamestar and also by renowned French site rpgfrance.com and got a lot of positive feedback. So now the only thing left is to make sure more people get to know about this unique project! So please tweet, post, email or dance about the game to game lovers everywhere! We need a lot more backers to make this thing fly!

Words have power! We have the best words!

One of the core concepts of the game focuses on the power that words have. In our game a protagonist’s words become actions that have all kinds of effects. This goes far beyond a mere dialogue – words drive and influence conflicts, they define your character’s stance, they bind or empower you. Here is a brief video of things that words do in our game.

Everyone in Backdrop has a unique voice and this is expressed by the visualization of the dialogues. The whole world reacts to what you say, so it is important that you choose your words carefully. Speaking of careful choices: Even though a certain US presidential candidate claims to have the best words, we beg to differ. I think ours clearly are much better looking 🙂

So get the word out!

Come on, Internet, make this work!

Back our wildly poetic, beautiful and daring RPG in which all the world is a stage, which has just been launched.
This side project has been going on for years, with a group of German game development veterans and is now finally ready to see the light of day!
Back it now: http://kck.st/2ddCeiz or help spread the word with thunderclap: http://thndr.me/bY8uIy – it will only take a few seconds…

Today is the day! Kickstarter begins at 3 pm!

We are excited, nervous, giddy with expectation and ever so slightly afraid. Our kickstarter launches today and we have also begun a Thunderclap to support the campaign. Just join in and let the world know we exist!

Help us make this wildly creative and madly ambitious project! Because words can have real power!

Trailer is ready

The first game trailer is done  and you can watch it here or in our gallery. As always please share and let people know!

Kickstarter announced!

The trailer is ready and we will release a link soon. This means come Monday the 26th we are going to go live with our kickstarter!

We are terribly excited, fearful and happy at the same time and we will need everyone’s help, so please let your friends know and share!

Game Trailer

Waiting for the game trailer to be finalized, so we can start the kickstarter this week. While we wait, have a look at one of our enemies – the evil fisherman who has caught a helpless mermaid in his net.

Prepping for our kickstarter…this is one of the masks your character can wear. The jester may not be a mighty warrior, but his wits and elegance make him capable of overcoming more powerful foes. He is a poet and a trickster in equal measure.

Update 4 – All the world is a stage and much ado about Backdrop!

Greetings and Salutations dear game connoisseurs,

Today we have some news on the project as well as a look at the game’s setting (further below):

Even though our campaign is a little on the slow side, we actually have been gaining momentum in the last days – unusually for a kickstarter we have had a steadily rising number of backers day after day (more than twice yesterday than we had three days ago). If we keep doubling our numbers our funding goal may still be attainable!

Meanwhile Backdrop has been selected and featured by kickstarter, for which we are terribly grateful and we have turned a few heads in the publishing community, getting invited to the ID@ Xbox program and receiving requests by not one but three VERY cool publishers who value originality, heart and soul over the smallest common creative denominator. Who would have thought there are so many good folk out there in the publishing business! It made us double our dedication to the game and gave us renewed vigour in following our vision.

That’s it from the current affairs section, please keep spreading the word and supporting our Thunderclap, to help us get to the end zone! Also, have a look at these two cool projects, who have been gracious enough to make shoutouts for us and are very cool game in their own rights:

Turn-based tactical PvP game Dungeon of Zaar and Rocket Punch’s Mecha Fighting Game Code: Hardcore

And now, to something completely different: A few words on Backdrop’s setting.
